Game Review: L.A. Noire

(J.P. Dozier)

Rockstar Games and Team Bondi have added another game to its family and this is one definitely worth playing. If you are someone that has been waiting on a game to play that doesn't take 8 hours or less to beat, here you go. This game has about 30+ hours of game play and there is never a dull moment in it. Not only is the plot amazing but RockStar has acquired an excellent cast for the characters. People such as Aaron Staton from T.V.'s Mad Men, John Noble from Fringe and Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, and Greg Grunberg from Heroes. And that is just a small sample of actors.

The game starts out during the post-war boom of Hollywood's Golden Age. You are Cole Phelps, an LAPD detective thrown into a city drowning in its own success. The whole city is surrounded by corruption, drugs and murders. As you fight to climb the ranks and to do what is right by the badge, you begin to unravel the truth about the corruption of the city and members of his own department. In doing so, putting himself and others in danger in order to do what is right.

This is actually a good trailer and yes, they used the music from Inception....

Now it is time for the breakdown of the game.

Story:
The storyline of the game is very well thought out and works really well. You learn that references of the murder of the Black Dahlia were used and works really well with the game. Brief history; The Black Dahlia was the nickname for Elizabeth Short. Her death was so gruesome and mysterious, it was publication gold. To this day, the killer is still unknown.
As you play, you learn more about your character Cole Phelps and his past in the military in Japan. It was a nice touch how the flashbacks stands out during the game play but works well.

You character, Cole Phelps, and one of many partners you acquire in the game.
Game Play:
Unlike the Grand Theft Auto games, you cannot go around creating chaos and mass destruction.  You do however get to steal cars, for police purposes, and run people over and whatever else gets in your way if you want. There are close to 100 different cars in the game and in order to unlock them, you must "confiscate" them from other drivers. When driving around, you have the choice to fast track to locations by letting your partner drive or drive around yourself. If you chose to drive around, you can get calls about crimes occurring around L.A. In order to get these mission options though, you have to be in a police car. These are fun little side missions but when you drive, you risk your case rankings, by potentially causing car damage and city damage, but have more fun driving around in nice old cars. Now, the impressive part about the game. There were 32 cameras used on the facial features alone when creating the characters. When you interrogate people, you really have to pay attention to their facial features to try and figure out if you think they are telling the truth, lying or doubt them. If you watch the T.V. show "Lie to Me", you have an advantage over other people. If you think they are lying, you have to have evidence for the accusation. Some people are easy to tell if they are lying or not but there are some that are really hard to tell.  At each crime scene, you must look around to collect evidence to build your case. As you look around, you will find things that have no importance to the case. You must determine, during interrogation, what is useful and what isn't. This is a Single Player game but there are some parts of that would have been awesome if it was multi-player, mainly the car chases would have been better with another player. The CPU will only fire at the other car if they are close enough and are not the best shooters. There is no online multi-player but maybe the next game will have it.

Graphics:
There really isn't anything special about the graphics to be honest. It is typical RockStar Games graphics but a bit smoother. I mean, you can just take a look at it and know that RockStar made it. There is a major downside though about the graphics. Even though, there were so many cameras used for the facial features, if you pay enough attention to their mouths, at times they are off a bit. They just look odd. The vehicles are beautiful however. I love old cars and there are a lot of them in the game. Just going out for s drive and enjoying the scenes.

This is my baby... Sooooooooo majestic.
Final Score: 4/5
Overall, This game is definitely worth playing. There is a lot of game play and is very enjoyable. This game is not meant for kids. There is strong language, violence, nudity and drug use. Sad to say, there are parts of pedophilia. Thank God there is nothing shown but there are a few references about it. It was actually the hardest part, for me, to get though in the game. It was fun to steal cars and just drive recklessly from time to time. There are some missions where you have a choice on who you want to go to jail. The side missions were a lot of fun because there were some to when you can just unload your gun into them or just aim you gun at them for a certain period of time and they will just stop and get arrested. The characters were great and very detailed in the features, which I liked about it. It showed there was time well spent in the game. Also, having some of the actors in the game were great because it was kind of like a guessing game, "Where have I seen them before". I had to IMDB the game just so I could figure out who these people were.  This game was a lot of fun to play but is more of a rental in my opinion. For me, once I beat it and did all the side missions, there wasn't much left after the game was done.

I am one person though, here are some professional critics on their take on the game.
