Nintendo to Unveil Wii Successor at E3?

Hopefully more than just two Wii's duct taped together.

File this under rumor for now, but Game Informer apparently has multiple sources saying that Nintendo plans on showing off their new console around E3.

This would somewhat explain why the Wii lineup for new releases has been kind of dry in recent months. With Nintendo only having Skyward Sword and the the sequel to Wii Play officially on the books, it would point to Nintendo pulling resources from Wii development to focus on a strong lineup for their new console.

But that aside, what do Game Informer's sources have to say about this new console? Hit the jump to find out.

Apparently Nintendo has been showing off the new system to publishers and developers to get them hyped and hopefully get on board for developing for their new system. So that way we don't have droughts in worthwhile games for the system like the Wii and Gamecube were prone to do.

And hopefully, less shovelware.

Anonymous sources (probably some of the aforementioned devs) say that the systems specs are comparable to the Xbox 360 and PS3 and that the system is capable of outputing in HD! Now, beautiful games like Super Mario Galaxy and Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom can actually be sharp and crisp on your HDTV instead of jagged and blurry.

We can make it better. We have the technology.

Also, with a system on par with the 360 and PS3 in terms of power and capabilities, not only would we finally start seeing games like Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption on a Nintendo system, but they also won't have to be scaled down like Dead Rising and Call of Duty were for the Wii.

New Nintendo HD: Now with more people on screen and shades of brown!

The only other thing they were able to pull out of their sources is a late 2012 release. But does that mean Japan, Europe, or the U.S.? Maybe a worldwide release? Couldn't tell ya. Motion controls or a standard controller? No idea. How about DVD or CD playback? Don't know. A better online infrastructure? One can only hope.

How about a name: Wii 2, Wii HD, or Nintendo HD?

Personally, I like Game Informer's name, Nintendo HD, but I guess we will have to wait till E3 in June to see if Nintendo can shed some light on these rumors.
