(Semi) Interview with the Champion - Devin Lattin

By Salvador

We had a great turnout for this weeks Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament. We had 24 total entrants and it came down to one,  Devin Lattin. With his Snake he fought his way through the 24 player pool and then advanced his way through the 16 player bracket to take it all. So here we have and abridged interview with the winner (Next time I'll bring a recorder...)

- What did you think of this tournament?

DL: It ran better with the MLG ruleset. But the actual set up of the bracket and the pool could be done better. It also feels like pools aren't necessarily a test of skill since the fighters can gang up on the best player to get a higher seeding.

- What other games do you play?

I've also  played SSFIV. But Brawl is my main game. I've played since  Smash Bros. 64.

- How would you rank the three Smash games?

Brawl, Melee, then 64. I'm partial to Brawl cause I'm best to it.

-What about the competition?

There were good Snakes and Meta Knights this time around. But there was a lack of variety in the combatants that people were using.

- What was the toughest part of the tourney?

The pool. You pretty much have to play like and jerk to win. You have to be careful of players ganging up on one person to get higher seeds. And worrying about scoring enough points to actually place. If you place 2nd or 3rd you got to make sure you play better so you can move on.

- Who is your main character and your favorite?

Snake is my main and favorite too. Followed by Falco (to counter other Snakes sometimes) and Ike. I started out with Ike but he lacks in a few areas to be really good for tourney play.

- Most difficult aspect of tournament play?

The mind game. Trying to keep your head in and focused in the fight and not be discouraged by a wrong button press or missed opportunity.

- Tips?

Watch videos of other players and try to play people better than you.

Devin will be attending a tournament in Concord. We wish him the best of luck and hope to see him at our next tournament. Keep an eye on our blog and Facebook for details!
